Cleavers (Galium Aparine) Cleavers, Goosegrass, Barweed, Catchweed, Stickywilly, Zhu Yang Yang is an annual plant found in moist or grassy areas and along the riverbanks in Canada, the eastern United States and the Pacific coast. It has a climbing, prickly stem that grows 2 to 6 feet long. Cleavers earned its name because the stems and leaves of the Cleavers plant are covered with little hooked bristles, which attach or “cleave” to passing objects and adjacent shrubs allowing it to climb upwards through dense undergrowth into daylight. Cleavers has a long history of use by herbalists and is naturally diuretic, so it’s good for the urinary tract.
When it’s dried and lightly roasted, Cleavers makes an excellent coffee substitute since it tastes similar to coffee.
